Can the Africans pull of a first class Mega Event?? Yes, we can!!
Bafana Bafana has not made it into the next round of the Fifa Soccer World Cup 2010, but they have proven that South African soccer is on the move up – kicking the Frenchies out with style is not bad at all.
And even more so, South Africa is proving the world that they are super hosts for such a huge event! All the bad talk, all the Afro- Pessimism predicting that there will be nothing but chaos, that you will be mugged or shot the minute you leave the airport …, has proved to be so very wrong. This event could not be much more peaceful anywhere else in the world!
We, that is Alex and Antje from the Live&Learn Team in South Africa, had the chance to be at the Italy-Paraguy Game at the Green Point Stadium, Cape Town – what a super atmosphere it was! The weather could not have been much worse – pouring rain and hauling winds – one of the worst winter days in Cape Town. But that did not harm the enthusiasm of the odd 67.000 spectators, who braved the storms. Be it Italien, Paraguyan, South African or the odd general soccer fan – everyone was cheerfully appreciating any good action on the field.
Getting to the stadium and in the stadium was so smooth, we could not believe it. South Africa has probably one of the worst public transport systems in the world, and especially the more wealthy population has probably one of the worst attitudes towards public transport …. “Public transport is used by the poor, it is dirty, it is dangerous …”. But the world cup indeed manages to make a difference in this regard: Suddenly there is a smooth running Park&Ride system, suddenly people who have not taken the train in 25 years rave about how much fun it was to take the train! This is really a major achievement in its own – think of it … 67 000 people (this is almost the double number of people my hometown Rendsburg!!) plus all the guys who are on the way to the Public Viewing Areas are on their feet to get to the same place! And it is just a smooth ride! Well done everybody! So let’s keep the systems and the spirit and continue using public transport beyond the world cup!

Ulf Iskender Kaschl wurde in Trier geboren. Zweimal lebte er jeweils für ein Jahr in Südafrika: vor 10 Jahren und 2009/2010. Gerade hat er dort geheiratet und kommt kurz vor der Premiere des Romans zurück nach Deutschland. Als Gründungsmitglied des Fördervereins Friends of Cape Windjammers e.V. in Deutschland und Unterstützer der NGO Cape Windjammers Education Trust mit Sitz in Kapstadt bringt er sich in den gesellschaftlichen Wandel der jungen Republik aktiv ein.
